Best of 2014

As 2014 comes to an end I have been listening to several of the past year’s albums and debating which ones are my favourite. I have been following several different magazine’s and online publication’s lists for the top albums of the year. I was surprised to find that I was at odds with Rolling Stone’s list. I am always just as excited about seeing who made their list as I am for Christmas. However, “Drunken Love” and “Turn Down For What” as the top one and two songs of 2014 were not what I was expecting. I am not exactly sure what the criteria is but surely these can’t be the best songs. I’m all for an eclectic taste in music but some of the choices seemed so off the wagon for me. The top albums were a little more in accordance with what Rolling Stone is all about with U2’s “Songs of Innocence” and Bruce Springsteen’s “High Hopes”.

I guess what it comes down to is that music is a subjective experience. One that feels so incredibly personal and individual. I will admit my list is incredibly biased. Of course it is. And no matter how hard I try and keep on top of all the new music coming out, it feels like there are still thousands of new albums and artists I have yet to listen to. But here we have it- my top 20 albums of 2014- in my own subjective opinion and in no particular order:

1. Jack White “Lazaretto”

2. Royal Blood “Royal Blood”

3. Arkells “High Noon”

4. The Black Keys “Turn Blue”

5. Die Antwoord “Donker Mag”
