Embracing my Dutch Roots

For a #TBT post this week I would like to share one of my favourites: Focus. Focus is a Dutch progressive rock band, that I like to describe as “Yodel-Rock”. Their biggest hit “Hocus Pocus” opens with some hard rockin’ riffs, but about a minute in the listener is pleasantly surprised with Thijs van Leer’s yodeling vocals.

Formed by van Leer in 1969, the band broke up in 1978 but reformed in 2002 (a new fact I just learned). They have tour dates for the rest of 2015, although only throughout Europe. Most people find Focus’ music to be a little too “far out” for their taste. However, taking up the heaviest volume of my modest record collection, I am one for the psychedelic and unique rock sounds. They are incredibly unique- a true jewel of the Netherlands.
